Our Top 5 Adobe After Effects scripts and plugins

Adobe After Effects is a great and very versatile piece of software. Its applications are huge, and for that reason there’s a huge amount of user generated code that’s been created in the form of scripts and plugins to increase efficiency, workflow or create automations.

These are not included with the software out of the box and must be downloaded and installed separately (Prices range from free- expensive!) which is why we thought we’d share some of our favourites.

Scripts and plugins help enhance and automate otherwise tedious functions and/or create results not possible any other way.

Here at YourFilm, we use After Effects in some form everyday.

We use it for finessing live action footage, colour grading, compositing, motion graphics, 2D animation (including character animation).

There are some After Effects scripts that are used by our team that they swear they couldn’t live without! Here we compile our top 5 Adobe After Effects scripts and plugins, as voted for by our 3 heaviest After Effects users: Lauren, Kevin and Gavin.

Ease and Wizz £16

Ever used easy ease on your keyframes? Of course you have. This script opens the floodgates on easy ease options, by giving you a list of preset eased keyframe options, including bounce and elastic. It allows you to quickly add dynamism to your keyframes.

Reposition anchor point £6

Reposition Anchor Point

This one is very simple, but very effective. It repositions the anchor point of any layer in your project whilst maintaining it’s position in the comp. We use it every day and we love it.

Rift

£20

A Gav and Lauren favourite. Provides methods to shift, sequence, stagger, or randomize layers properties like in and out points, keyframes, markers and more. Massive timesaver.

BG Renderer £22

One weakness of After Effects is that once you set off your render queue, you can’t work in projects until it’s finished. With  BG (Background) renderer, this isn’t the case- giving you the option to render projects in the background if you need to keep working.

Decompose Text £10

Decompose Text

Separates text layers into its individual characters, great time saver for more in depth motion text design.

PuppetTools 3 £25

PuppetTools 3

The puppet tool animation assistant. A great script to make the After Effects puppet tool more powerful. The main feature is the Inverse Kinematics (IK) that you can add to your rig, but also the easy looping and pins to nulls make character animation in After Effects far more effective .
